Lesson Plan: Close Reading of "The Science Behind Why We Yawn"
Grade Level: 7 ELA Time Allotment: 60 Minutes
- Objective: Students will be able to identify main ideas and supporting details in an informational text and explain the scientific theories behind yawning using textual evidence.
- Standard(s): CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.7.1 - Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
- Hook (5-7 minutes): Begin by asking students, "What do you think makes us yawn?" Have students turn and talk with a partner for 2 minutes, then share out a few ideas with the whole class. Record their initial thoughts on the board. Introduce the text, "The Science Behind Why We Yawn," and state that today they will explore what scientists say about yawning.
- Direct Instruction (10-12 minutes):
* Explain that close reading involves carefully rereading a text to uncover deeper meaning and gather evidence. Introduce the annotation protocol for today's text. Model the first paragraph using a projected copy of the text, demonstrating how to apply each annotation. * Annotation Protocol: * Underline the main idea or topic sentence of each paragraph. * Circle any scientific terms or new vocabulary. * Put a star next to specific theories or explanations for yawning. * Write questions or connections in the margins.
- Guided Practice (15-20 minutes):
* Students will read the first two paragraphs ("The Science Behind Why We Yawn" and "One prominent theory...") independently, applying the annotation protocol. * After reading, facilitate a brief class discussion using the initial text-dependent questions. Students should refer to their annotations. * Text-Dependent Questions (Initial): * According to the text, what are some common associations people have with yawning? (Paragraph 1) * What is the "brain cooling" hypothesis, and what evidence does the text provide to support it? (Paragraph 2)
- Independent Practice (15-20 minutes):
* Students will continue reading the remaining paragraphs ("Another common belief..." and "Interestingly, yawning is also highly contagious...") independently, applying the annotation protocol. * After reading and annotating, students will answer the deeper analysis questions in their notebooks, citing evidence from the text. * Text-Dependent Questions (Deeper Analysis): * How does the "alertness" theory of yawning differ from the "brain cooling" hypothesis? What purpose does each theory suggest yawning serves? (Paragraphs 2 & 3) * The text describes contagious yawning as "social glue." Explain what this phrase means in the context of the article, providing examples of who it affects most. (Paragraph 4) * Based on the text, what is still unclear about yawning, despite the theories presented? (Paragraph 5)
- Formative Check (5 minutes):
* Exit Ticket: "Based on today's reading, write one new thing you learned about yawning and one question you still have." Collect tickets as students leave.
- Differentiation:
* Support: Provide sentence starters for text-dependent questions. Allow students to work in pairs for independent practice. Pre-teach key vocabulary before the lesson. * Extension: Ask advanced learners to research one of the theories further and be prepared to share additional findings in the next class. Challenge them to find a different informational text about an involuntary human reflex and apply the same close-reading strategies.
- Homework (Optional):
* Find two more examples of how the "brain cooling" hypothesis might explain yawning in different situations (e.g., animals, specific human activities). Be prepared to share your findings.
